COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Degree with Honours) is a one-year program requiring the successful completion of 100 credit points, designed to provide students with advanced skills and knowledge in medical research. The course includes three compulsory subjects: Introduction to Medical Research (MEDS40007), Advanced Medical Research (MEDS40006), and Project in Medical Research (MEDS40008). It can be commenced at two points in the year, either in January or July, offering flexibility for students planning their academic pathway. The program aims to enhance students’ understanding of the scientific method and the role of research in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. Through a combination of coursework and independent study, students will learn how to critically evaluate scientific literature, design and conduct research studies, and analyze and interpret data within a clinical or laboratory-based context. The honours year places a strong emphasis on the development of practical research skills and academic writing, culminating in a substantial individual research project. Under the supervision of experienced researchers and academics, students will investigate a chosen topic in depth, gaining hands-on experience in the process of conducting meaningful scientific research. This allows students to contribute original insights to their field while also developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific communication. The course prepares graduates for a wide range of future opportunities, including entry into higher research degrees such as a Master’s or PhD, or roles in clinical research, public health, policy, and biomedical industries. It is particularly suited to those who are passionate about understanding the mechanisms of health and disease and who are motivated to make a meaningful contribution to medical science through evidence-based research and innovation.
