COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne offers a highly flexible and comprehensive undergraduate experience, allowing students to shape their degree to align with their interests and career goals. With over 40 majors available, ranging from languages and psychology to economics and media and communication, students can explore a diverse array of disciplines. The course is structured over three years, with an optional fourth year for honours. In the first year, students are introduced to the multidisciplinary approach that defines the Arts program. This foundation includes Arts discipline subjects, at least one Arts Discovery subject, and breadth subjects—courses taken from outside the Arts faculty that broaden academic perspectives and skill sets. The second year focuses on finalising major and minor selections, with students undertaking intermediate-level subjects in their chosen areas. By third year, students complete advanced subjects and a capstone project within their major, integrating their knowledge and preparing for life after graduation. The honours year is available to high-achieving students and involves an extended research project, further developing analytical and academic skills. A key feature of the program is the breadth component, which encourages exploration outside the core Arts disciplines. Students can pursue topics of personal interest, complement their major with practical skills such as business or communication, or even qualify for graduate study in a new field through structured breadth tracks.
