COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Swinburne is designed to develop highly skilled, industry-ready engineers with a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. From the first semester, students are introduced to core engineering concepts through units such as Humanitarian Engineering Design Project, Engineering Materials, Preliminary Mathematics, and Energy and Motion. These foundational units build problem-solving skills, technical literacy, and an understanding of engineering principles. In the second semester, students progress to programming, engineering mechanics, linear algebra, and projects that integrate technology in Indigenous contexts, preparing them for increasingly complex design and analytical challenges. As students advance, major units like Product Visualisation, Digital Modelling, Product Design Engineering Studio, and Materials and Processes allow them to specialise in areas such as mechanical, product, or software engineering. Sustainable Product Design and Structural Mechanics further develop their ability to design with ethical, environmental, and societal considerations in mind. A key feature of the program is Work Integrated Learning, with both major and minor professional placements providing students with practical industry experience. These placements replace some academic units and give students direct exposure to engineering practice, enhancing employability and professional confidence. In the later years, students engage in capstone projects and advanced major units such as Machine Design Project, Digital Manufacturing, Integrated Engineering Design Project, Engineering Technology Projects A and B, Global Design, Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Technologies, and Manufacturing Systems and Design. Electives allow students to customise their learning pathways to match individual interests or career goals. Through this progressive and immersive approach, Swinburne’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) equips graduates with the technical expertise, design thinking, and professional attributes required to succeed across multiple engineering disciplines, from mechanical and civil to robotics, software, and biomedical fields. By graduation, students are prepared to tackle real-world engineering challenges, innovate responsibly, and lead in a rapidly evolving global engineering landscape.
