COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Animation at Swinburne offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines creative storytelling, technical skills, and industry-relevant experience to prepare students for careers in animation and related fields. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in the principles and techniques of animation through core units such as Introduction to Animation, 2D Production Techniques for Animation, History of Animation, and Sound Design and Acquisition. These units equip students with essential skills in drawing, movement, character development, and audio integration, while also providing historical and theoretical context for contemporary animation practices. In the second semester, students build on this foundation by exploring character and environment design, 3D Production Techniques, Action Analysis and Locomotion, and Genre and the Moving Image, allowing them to develop proficiency in both technical and creative aspects of animation production. In the second year, students refine their skills through advanced core and major units such as Advanced Character Design for Animation, Writing and Directing for Animation, Acting for Animation, and Producing and Production Management for Animation. These units emphasize narrative development, performance, and production workflows, fostering the ability to create compelling and professional-quality animation projects. The final year centers on major projects, including Preproduction and Production and Post Production, which provide students with opportunities to apply their cumulative skills in fully-realized animation works. Throughout the degree, elective units allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, whether in visual effects, digital media, or specialized animation techniques. Small, hands-on classes ensure close interaction with instructors and peers, while project-based learning fosters collaboration, problem-solving, and creative innovation. By graduation, students are equipped with the technical expertise, creative vision, and professional experience needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving animation industry, from film and television to gaming, advertising, and digital media.
