COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Specialisation within the Master of Teaching provides a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare future educators with the knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities required to support the learning and development of young children from infancy to early childhood. The program begins with foundational units such as Principles and Practices in Early Childhood Education, Play and Pedagogies in Early Childhood Education, Children, Families and Communities, and Curriculum Studies in Early Childhood, developing students’ understanding of child development, educational theories, family partnerships, and effective curriculum planning. Students further strengthen their professional practice through units including Theory to Practice: Competency and Capability of Preschoolers, Early Childhood Matters, Leadership and Advocacy in Early Childhood, and Education and Care for Infants and Toddlers, gaining expertise in supporting children’s growth, wellbeing, and learning through inclusive and engaging approaches. Professional Experience units provide valuable practical opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in authentic early childhood settings. In the second year, students explore advanced topics such as Inclusive and Special Education, Indigenous Australian perspectives, Creative Arts, Health and Wellbeing, Environmental education, and the relationship between brain development and learning. The Teachers as Researchers units develop students’ ability to investigate educational practices and implement evidence-based improvements. Overall, this specialisation prepares graduates to become reflective, inclusive, and skilled early childhood teachers capable of creating positive learning environments and supporting lifelong development in young children.
