COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) program prepares students for a career as a qualified social worker, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to support vulnerable individuals and communities. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding through units such as Social Work Foundations for Practice (SWRK5001) and Social Work Direct Practice I (SWRK5002), which introduce core social work principles, ethical frameworks, and direct practice skills. Students also explore Issues of Protection (WELF3002) and Social Policy and Law for Social Work (SWRK5003), gaining insight into legal, policy, and safeguarding considerations relevant to social work practice. Social Work Direct Practice II (SWRK5004) further develops practical skills, and Social Work Field Placement I (SWRK5007) provides 36 weeks of professional experience, allowing students to apply theory in real-world settings under supervision.In the second year, the program deepens students’ expertise with units such as Health and Indigenous Peoples (INDG6002) and Research for Social Work (SWRK6003), enhancing cultural competence and research literacy. Social Work Direct Practice III: Well-being and Recovery (SWRK6001) and Social Work in Groups and Communities (SWRK6002) focus on advanced practice, community engagement, and group interventions. Students also study Social Work Organisations, Leadership and Management (SWRK6004), gaining knowledge in organisational structures, management, and leadership within social services. The second-year Field Placement II (SWRK6007) offers an additional 36 weeks of supervised professional experience, consolidating practical skills and preparing graduates for independent, competent practice as professional social workers.Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and leadership abilities, ensuring they are equipped to support individuals, families, and communities while navigating complex social issues such as mental health, domestic violence, addiction, and social injustice.
