COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (Civil) program is designed to equip students with advanced technical expertise, professional skills, and sustainable engineering practices essential for leadership roles in the civil engineering industry. In the first year, students develop core technical competencies through units such as Building Information Modelling Systems (CIVL6001) and Building Information Technologies and Practices (CIVL6003), which focus on digital design, modelling, and construction technologies. Geotechnical Engineering (CIVL6002) and Concrete Structure Systems (CIVL6005) provide a strong foundation in soil mechanics, structural design, and material properties, while Transportation Engineering Systems (CIVL6006) explores planning, design, and management of transport infrastructure. Environmental Management Systems (CIVL6004) and Engineering Management for a Sustainable Future (ENGN6002) integrate principles of sustainability and responsible engineering practice. Management Communication (BUSN5003) develops essential professional communication skills.In the second year, students progress to research-focused and applied practice units, including the Professional Practice Masters Thesis sequence (ENGN6003 and ENGN6004), where they conduct substantial independent research projects addressing real-world engineering challenges. Advanced technical units such as Steel and Timber Engineering Systems (CIVL6007) and Water Cycle Management Systems (CIVL6008) further develop expertise in structural and environmental engineering solutions. Elective or university-wide postgraduate units allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests or emerging industry needs. Aboriginal Community Organisations: Ethics and Sustainability (INDG2013) introduces ethical considerations and sustainable practices in collaboration with Indigenous communities, reinforcing the program’s commitment to socially responsible engineering.This structured program ensures graduates acquire both the technical knowledge and professional skills necessary to design, implement, and manage complex civil engineering projects while addressing environmental, social, and sustainability challenges, preparing them for senior engineering roles or further research and leadership opportunities.
