COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology program is designed to prepare students for professional practice in veterinary settings, integrating foundational science, animal care, clinical skills, and professional development over three years. In the first year, students build essential knowledge in areas such as Foundations of Veterinary Professionalism and Communication, Animal Husbandry, Handling and Behaviour, Chemistry, Cells and Molecules, Animal Production, Anatomy and Physiology for Veterinary Technologists, Principles of Animal Health Assessment, and Surgical Theatre and Dental Care. Year 1 also includes a Work Integrated Learning component, ensuring early exposure to practical veterinary environments.In the second year, students expand their technical and clinical expertise through units including Medical Nursing for Veterinary Technologists 1 and 2, Diagnostic Procedures, Laboratory Techniques and Imaging, Applied Veterinary Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology for Veterinary Technologists, Anaesthesia and Analgesia, and Animal Nutrition for Health, Performance and Production. Completion of Year 2 Work Integrated Learning prepares students for advanced practice in their final year.The third year focuses on advanced clinical skills, professional practice, and applied knowledge. Units include Medical Nursing for Veterinary Technologists 3, Veterinary Professionalism and Communication 2, Animal Emergency Management in Natural Disasters, and The Professional Veterinary Technologist, complemented by Clinical Placements 1 and 2. Elective opportunities and advanced anatomy and physiology units further enhance students’ specialised knowledge and practical competence.Overall, the program integrates rigorous academic study, hands-on clinical training, and professional skill development to equip graduates with the expertise, ethical understanding, and confidence required for careers as veterinary technologists, capable of working effectively in diverse animal health and welfare settings.
