COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Specialisation within the Bachelor of Science provides students with comprehensive scientific knowledge and practical skills to study, conserve, and sustainably manage marine environments. The program begins with foundational subjects in earth systems, marine science and management, biology, chemistry, scientific communication, environmental science, data analysis, and Indigenous knowledge, establishing a strong understanding of marine ecosystems and ecological processes. In the second year, students expand their expertise through specialised studies in ecology, fish ecology and aquaculture, marine invertebrates, oceanography, geographic information systems (GIS), quantitative research methods, drone technology, and professional practice. The final year focuses on advanced marine science topics including coral reef ecosystems, fisheries and marine parks management, marine megafauna, and ocean change biology, alongside flexible option units that allow students to pursue individual interests. Throughout the degree, students participate in laboratory work, field-based learning, scientific investigations, and research activities, developing practical skills in marine data collection, environmental monitoring, biodiversity assessment, and resource management. Graduates are equipped for careers as marine biologists, fisheries officers, aquaculture specialists, marine conservation officers, environmental consultants, marine park managers, research scientists, and policy advisors, contributing to the sustainable management and conservation of marine ecosystems in Australia and globally.
