COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Midwifery program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of midwifery theory, practice, and professional skills over three years, integrating academic study with extensive clinical experience. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through units such as Foundations of Midwifery, Well Woman – Pregnancy, Labour and Birth, Postnatal, Preconception to Early Parenthood, and Introductory Anatomy and Physiology. Complementing these, students engage in Midwifery Professional Experience 1, gaining early exposure to clinical practice, while courses such as The Reflective Learner and Health Science Scholar, Health and Indigenous Australian Peoples, and Foundations of Evidence for Health Science Practitioners develop critical thinking, reflective practice, and cultural competence. The second year focuses on more specialised care and advanced clinical skills. Students undertake Midwifery Professional Experience 2a and 2b, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. Units include Caring for the Woman During Complex Pregnancy, Caring for the Woman During Complex Labour and Birth, Caring for the Woman with Postnatal Complexities, Care of the Unwell Baby, Perinatal Mental Health, and Introductory Pharmacology, ensuring students develop expertise in managing complex maternal and neonatal conditions. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through advanced practice, mentorship, and transition-to-practice preparation. Midwifery Professional Experience 3a and 3b provide immersive clinical exposure, while Midwifery Practice: Mentorship A and B support guided skill development. Additional units such as Maternal and Women’s Health, Interprofessional Health Practice, Transition to Practice, and Practice-Based Health Research prepare students for professional practice, teamwork, and evidence-based decision-making.Overall, the program combines rigorous academic study, practical skill development, and extensive clinical placements, equipping graduates to enter the midwifery profession as competent, confident, and ethically responsible practitioners, capable of providing high-quality care to women, babies, and families in diverse healthcare settings.
