COURSE CURRICULUM
Year One of the Master of Writing and Publishing program focuses on developing foundational and practical skills through five core courses. Students begin with Foundation for Bowen Street Press, a 24-credit course that introduces the operations of a student-led publishing house and practical publishing workflows. Contemporary Writing and Publishing and The Craft of Writing and Editing, each worth 12 credits, build students’ skills in writing, editing, and understanding the contemporary publishing landscape. Development at Bowen Street Press, a 24-credit course, emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing students to participate in real-world publishing projects, while The Art of Writing and Editing, also 24 credits, develops advanced writing techniques and editorial judgment. Together, these courses establish both the theoretical understanding and practical expertise necessary for success in professional publishing environments. In Year Two, students continue to build expertise through four core courses and one elective. Production at Bowen Street Press is a 24-credit course focusing on the operational and production aspects of publishing, including print and digital workflows. Research Methods in Media and Communication, a 12-credit course, equips students with analytical and research skills to critically engage with media and publishing projects. Entrepreneurship at Bowen Street Press, worth 24 credits, encourages students to explore innovative approaches to publishing and industry engagement, while Professional Research Project (Writing and Publishing), also 24 credits, enables students to undertake an independent, industry-relevant project that demonstrates their professional capabilities. In addition to these core courses, students select one 12-credit elective from a diverse School Options list that aligns with their professional interests. Options include courses such as Change Communication, Corporate Writing and Editing, Health Communication, International Media Collaboration, Risk and Crisis Communication, and Wicked Problems: Innovative Solutions, among others. This elective allows students to specialise and deepen their knowledge in a particular area of writing, publishing, or communication. By the end of the program, graduates possess strong practical skills, industry experience, and professional networks, preparing them for careers in publishing, content creation, editing, and related creative industries.
