COURSE CURRICULUM

This Master of Urban and Regional Planning program is designed to provide students with the advanced knowledge and practical skills required to work effectively in planning, policy, and environmental management roles. In the first year, students complete 60 credit points of core courses that build a strong foundation in the principles, history, and economics of urban planning. Subjects such as History of Planning and Strategic Planning Issues provide insight into the evolution and frameworks of planning practice, while Urban Economics and Spatial Development introduce analytical tools for evaluating urban growth and land use patterns. Sustainability, Governance and Social Change addresses the importance of sustainable development and ethical governance in shaping urban environments, and Spatial Thinking and Urban Design equips students with the spatial analysis and design skills necessary for practical applications in planning.In addition to these core courses, students complete 36 credit points from program option courses, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests or professional goals. This flexibility supports the development of specialized knowledge in areas such as environmental planning, community engagement, or policy analysis.In the second year, students focus on advanced planning practice and research, completing 72 credit points from a combination of courses designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with applied project work. Natural Resource Management and Statutory Planning cover legal, regulatory, and environmental aspects of planning, while Planning Theory and Research Strategies – Social Sciences strengthen students’ critical thinking, research methods, and analytical capabilities. The Urban Planning and Environment Project is a major capstone experience that synthesizes the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program, providing an opportunity to engage in real-world planning challenges and develop evidence-based solutions.Graduates of this program will be prepared for careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, government agencies, consultancy firms, and non-government organizations. They will possess the skills to analyze complex urban issues, develop sustainable planning strategies, and contribute to socially and environmentally responsible urban development, making them highly competitive and effective professionals in the planning and policy sector.
