COURSE CURRICULUM

This Master of Urban Design program is structured to equip students with advanced skills and knowledge necessary for careers in urban planning, design, and development. In the first year, students complete six core courses that provide a strong foundation in both the theory and practice of urban design. Courses such as Urban Design Studio 1 and 2 allow students to engage in practical, studio-based learning, applying design principles to real-world projects. Complementing this hands-on experience are courses in Urbanism: History and Theory, Case Studies in Urban Design, Asian Urbanism, and Urban Design Professional Practice, which provide a critical understanding of historical, cultural, and professional contexts shaping urban environments.In the second year, the program deepens practical and research capabilities through advanced studio work and portfolio development. Urban Design Studio 3 and 4 focus on complex, large-scale design projects, while the Urban Design Research Portfolio allows students to integrate research methodologies with design practice, producing substantial work that demonstrates their analytical and creative abilities. Eco-Urban Practices introduces sustainable and environmentally responsible approaches, ensuring graduates are prepared to address contemporary urban challenges such as climate change, population growth, and sustainable development.Students also have the flexibility to select options that align with their professional interests. One course may be chosen from the Global, Urban and Social Studies options, offering insight into regional urbanisation issues, planning theory, housing policy, or healthy city planning. Additionally, students select one course from the Property, Construction and Project Management options, which can include subjects such as Sustainability in the Built Environment, Real Estate Law, Building Systems, or Project Management Techniques.By the conclusion of the program, graduates will possess a balanced combination of practical design expertise, critical research skills, and a comprehensive understanding of urban environments, policies, and sustainable practices. This prepares them to take on leadership roles in urban design, planning consultancy, government agencies, and multidisciplinary development projects, contributing meaningfully to the creation of well-planned, sustainable, and socially responsive urban spaces.
