COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Science (Research) at RMIT is a structured, research-intensive program designed to develop advanced research capabilities and the ability to translate knowledge into meaningful action. In the initial stage of candidature, students must complete a core foundational course, “Doing Research for Design and Social Context,” which provides essential training in research design, methodology, and critical inquiry within social science disciplines. During their studies, students may also, in consultation with their supervisory team, undertake up to two additional coursework subjects to strengthen their methodological and theoretical expertise. These may include “Research for Impact in Design and Social Context,” qualitative research methods, quantitative research techniques, or critical and social theory, depending on their research focus. Students may also complete up to 12 credit points of approved university research electives to further support their academic development. The primary component of the program is a substantial Masters Research thesis, completed through staged enrolment in 48, 36, 24, or 12 credit point units, allowing students to progressively develop and refine their research project. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to engage with real-world issues across social, urban, and global contexts, while building strong analytical, methodological, and communication skills. The program prepares graduates to conduct independent, high-level research that contributes to academic knowledge, policy development, and professional practice in social science fields.
