COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Computer Science by Research at RMIT is a structured postgraduate program designed to build advanced research capabilities in computing and information technology. Students begin with the compulsory course “Doing Research for Engineering and Computing,” which must be completed before the first milestone review and provides essential training in research design, methodologies, and academic inquiry. Before the second milestone review, students also complete “Research for Impact in Engineering and Computing,” which focuses on applying research to real-world engineering and computing challenges. In consultation with their supervisory team, students may further strengthen their research skills by selecting one additional course from options such as Quantitative Research Techniques, Qualitative Research Methods, Bioinformatics and Multi-Omics Data Analysis, or Digital Technologies. These electives allow students to tailor their learning to their specific research area. Students may also undertake up to 12 credit points of approved university research electives to support their thesis work. The primary component of the degree is the Masters Research thesis, completed through staged enrolment in 12, 24, 36, or 48 credit point research units under the COSC course codes at the City Campus. Under expert supervision, students conduct independent, original research in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, distributed systems, software engineering, and related computing fields. The program prepares graduates for careers in research, academia, and advanced technology industries.
