COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Geospatial Science program provides students with advanced skills in spatial information analysis, management, capture, and visualisation, preparing graduates for professional roles in government, industry, and research sectors that rely on geospatial technologies. In the first year, students complete 84 credit points of core courses including GIS Fundamentals, Database Concepts, Satellite Positioning, Remote Sensing, GIS Principles, Cartography and Visualisation, and Geospatial Programming. These courses build a solid foundation in spatial data management, geospatial software, and the technical skills required for effective mapping and analysis. Students also select 12 credit points from the Geospatial Science Options list, which includes courses such as GIS Analytics, Human Geography, Advanced GIS, Satellites and Space Debris, or Geospatial Science Work Experience, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests. In the second year, the program emphasizes research, advanced applications, and professional development. Students complete 12 credit points in Research Methods or Research Methods in Engineering to develop skills in scientific investigation, experimental design, and data analysis. They then undertake a major dissertation, either as a single 48-credit point project or in two parts (Dissertation Part A: Preparation and Dissertation Part B: Implementation), applying their knowledge to an independent research project. Additional credits are earned through Geospatial Science Options and interdisciplinary electives, including GIS Analytics, Advanced GIS, Spatial Thinking and Urban Design, Integrated Transport Planning, Big Data Management, Artificial Intelligence, Project Management, and applied statistical and analytical methods. This combination of technical, analytical, and research-focused coursework ensures students develop expertise in geospatial technologies, spatial data capture, visualisation, and decision-making tools. Graduates are equipped to tackle complex spatial problems, support data-driven planning and policy, and innovate in sectors such as urban planning, environmental management, transport, infrastructure, and location-based services.
