COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) at RMIT is structured as a two-year postgraduate program that combines advanced coursework with a substantial research project to develop specialist expertise in environmental engineering. In the first year, students complete four core subjects covering sustainable engineering practice and design, innovation and technology management, risk and project management, and modelling and simulation of engineering systems. These foundational courses build essential technical and managerial skills required for complex engineering problem-solving. Students then select four additional subjects from areas such as humanitarian engineering, urban ecology, water resource system optimisation, water, sanitation and waste management, urban hydrology, advanced soil remediation, and professional experience, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific environmental interests. In the second year, students complete three advanced electives from options including wastewater reclamation technologies, environmental management systems, sustainability practices, ethics, GIS fundamentals, and further professional experience. They also undertake a compulsory course in research methods in engineering to develop strong research and analytical skills. The program concludes with a major Masters Research Project, completed either as a single 48-credit-point thesis or as two staged components. Overall, the program equips graduates with advanced technical knowledge, research capability, leadership skills, and practical experience, preparing them for senior roles in environmental engineering, sustainability management, consulting, and infrastructure development.
