COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering) program is designed to equip students with the advanced technical knowledge and practical skills required to excel in the planning, design, and management of complex civil infrastructure projects. In the first year, students complete four core courses that provide a foundation in sustainable engineering practice and design, innovation and technology management, risk and project management, and modelling and simulation of engineering systems. These courses are complemented by four elective courses, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest such as infrastructure planning and management, railway infrastructure, stability of earth structures, advanced laboratory testing, civil tunnelling, and professional engineering experience. This combination ensures that students develop both theoretical understanding and practical expertise in critical areas of civil engineering.In the second year, students continue to build their expertise through advanced courses in transport infrastructure, geotechnical design and construction, structural assessment, road design and smart pavement materials, and structural refurbishment and retrofitting. A professional experience course is also available to provide real-world industry exposure, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice. Additionally, students undertake a research methods course that develops their analytical and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the culmination of the program: the Master’s research project. The research component can be completed as a single comprehensive project or as two sequential parts, enabling students to engage deeply with a specific civil engineering challenge and produce work of professional and academic significance.The program emphasizes multidisciplinary learning, project-based experiences, and industry engagement, ensuring graduates are prepared to take on leadership roles in civil engineering projects. By the end of the program, students will have gained a combination of technical, managerial, and research skills that allow them to contribute effectively to infrastructure development, transport planning, geotechnical engineering, and other specialized areas within the civil engineering industry.
