COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education by Research at RMIT is a structured postgraduate program designed to develop advanced research expertise in education through coursework and a substantial supervised thesis. In the initial stage, students must complete a core subject, “Doing Research for Design and Social Context,” which provides foundational knowledge in research design, methodologies, and critical inquiry relevant to educational studies. Students are then required to complete one additional compulsory research methods course in consultation with their supervisory team, choosing between qualitative research methods or quantitative research techniques depending on their research focus. During their candidature, students may also undertake one further elective subject in areas such as research for impact in design and social context, creative practice research, qualitative or quantitative methods, or critical and social theory, depending on supervisory approval. In addition, students may complete up to 12 credit points of approved university research electives to support their specialised study. The major component of the program is the Masters Research thesis, which is completed through staged enrolment in 48, 36, 24, or 12 credit point units, allowing for progressive development of the research project. Throughout the program, students develop advanced skills in educational research, critical analysis, and academic writing, enabling them to contribute original knowledge to the field and inform educational practice and policy through evidence-based inquiry.
