COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Design at RMIT is a research-focused postgraduate program that combines foundational coursework with a substantial supervised project or thesis, enabling students to contribute original knowledge to the fields of fashion, textiles, and design. At the beginning of the program, students must complete the core course “Doing Research for Design and Social Context,” which introduces essential research principles, methodologies, and critical approaches relevant to design practice and theory. During their candidature, students may also choose one additional research-focused subject in consultation with their supervisory team, selecting from options such as Research for Impact in Design and Social Context, Creative Practice Research, Qualitative Research Methods, Quantitative Research Techniques, or Critical and Social Theory. Students may further enhance their studies by undertaking up to 12 credit points of approved university research electives aligned with their research interests. The major component of the degree is the Masters Research project or thesis, completed through staged enrolment in 12, 24, 36, or 48 credit point research units at the Brunswick Campus. This flexible structure allows students to progressively develop and refine their research project under expert supervision. Throughout the program, students build advanced research, analytical, creative, and communication skills, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to professional practice, academic scholarship, and innovation within the design and fashion industries.
