COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Design at RMIT is a research-focused postgraduate program that integrates coursework with a substantial supervised project or thesis, enabling students to explore design as a method of generating knowledge. In the initial stage, students complete a core subject, “Doing Research for Design and Social Context,” which introduces foundational research approaches, methodologies, and critical frameworks relevant to design practice. During their candidature, students may also select up to two additional coursework subjects in consultation with their supervisory team, depending on their research direction. These electives may include “Research for Impact in Design and Social Context,” creative practice research, qualitative research methods, quantitative research techniques, or critical and social theory, providing flexibility to strengthen both conceptual and methodological skills. Students may also undertake up to 12 credit points of approved university research electives to further support their specialised focus. The primary component of the program is the Masters Research project or thesis, completed through staged enrolment in 12, 24, 36, or 48 credit point units, allowing for progressive development and refinement of the research outcome. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to engage with design practice communities and contribute to contemporary discourse in the field. Graduates develop advanced cognitive, technical, and creative abilities to conduct independent research, generate and evaluate ideas, and communicate findings effectively to diverse audiences, preparing them for high-level professional or academic careers.
