COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Communication Design at RMIT is a two-year postgraduate program that develops advanced creative, conceptual, and professional skills in contemporary communication design practice. In the first year, students complete 84 credit points of foundational and studio-based learning, including major studio subjects such as Communication Design Studio and Communication Design Entrepreneurship Studio, which focus on developing practical design capabilities, creative problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking. Supporting courses such as Design Studies, Experimental Typography Workshop, and Typography for Publication Design strengthen theoretical understanding and technical expertise in visual communication. Students also complete electives such as Design and Digital Media Professional Practice or Communication Design for Social Change, which broaden their understanding of professional contexts and societal impact. In the second year, students advance to 96 credit points of higher-level study, including Advanced Communication Design Studio and a significant Professional Research Project, which allows them to independently investigate a design problem in depth. Additional subjects such as Research Methods for Design and Digital Media, Service Design, Design Strategy, and Curating and Exhibiting Communication Design help students refine strategic thinking, research skills, and professional practice. The program prepares graduates for leadership roles in communication design studios, agencies, consultancies, and organisations by combining creative experimentation with research, strategy, and professional industry engagement.
