COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Biotechnology program provides students with a comprehensive foundation in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and computational biology while integrating practical and business-oriented skills. In the first year, students complete eight core courses that build the essential scientific and analytical knowledge required for advanced study in biotechnology and bioinformatics. Core subjects include Computational Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biostatistics, Biotechnology and Business, Systems Biology, Proteomics and Designer Proteins, and Genomics and Gene Technologies. These courses are offered across both the City and Bundoora campuses, allowing students to gain diverse perspectives and hands-on experience in laboratory and research settings. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing students to address complex biological problems and explore innovative solutions.In the second year, students follow one of two pathways depending on their focus and career goals. Option one involves completing a Research Methods course, followed by a substantial research or work experience project, such as the Advanced Biotechnology/Bioinformatics Research Project or Work Experience Practicum. This pathway is designed to provide students with intensive research training, develop critical problem-solving skills, and enhance professional experience in real-world settings. In addition, students select three courses or thirty-six credit points from a range of minor or science option courses, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests and career aspirations. Option two provides an alternative research pathway with a combination of Research Methods and a Biotechnology/Bioinformatics Research Project, offering flexibility for students to develop both practical and investigative expertise. The program is structured to ensure that graduates emerge as highly skilled, adaptable, and knowledgeable professionals, capable of contributing to biotechnology, bioinformatics, and related industries, while also possessing a solid foundation for further study or advanced research.
