COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Medical Physics at RMIT combines specialised coursework with an extensive research component to prepare graduates for advanced roles in medical physics, radiation sciences, and healthcare technology. Students begin the program by completing the compulsory course “Doing Research for Sciences,” which must be undertaken before the first milestone review and provides essential research skills and methodologies. The coursework component also includes Radiation Physics and Radiation Protection, Radiotherapy Physics and Modelling, Human Structure and Function, and Medical Imaging Physics. Together, these subjects provide a comprehensive understanding of radiation science, radiation safety, medical imaging technologies, radiotherapy applications, and human anatomy and physiology, forming a strong foundation for professional practice and research in medical physics. The major component of the program is the research thesis, which is completed through staged enrolment in Masters Research courses ranging from 12 to 48 credit points, depending on the stage of candidature. Under expert academic supervision, students conduct original research in areas relevant to medical physics, health physics, radiation protection, diagnostic imaging, or radiotherapy. The research project enables students to apply advanced scientific knowledge to real-world healthcare challenges while developing high-level analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. Overall, the program integrates theoretical learning with independent research, preparing graduates for careers in hospitals, research institutions, healthcare organisations, and the broader medical physics profession.
