COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Youth Work program is structured over three years, providing students with a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional skills to work effectively with young people. In the first year, students complete eight core courses totaling 96 credit points. These courses include Self, Identity and Agency (HUSO2164), Youth Work 1: An Introduction to the Field (HWSS2229), Youth Studies 1: Theories, Trends and Development (HUSO2414), Australian Society in a Global Context (HUSO1207), Public Policy (POLI1066), Youth Work 2: Field Education 1 (Engaging in Industry) (HWSS2230), Youth Studies 2: Representations and Research (HUSO2415), and Introduction to Law (HUSO2235). This first-year curriculum provides a foundation in youth studies, social policy, law, and practical engagement with the youth sector.In the second year, students deepen their understanding through six core courses: Youth Work Ethics (HWSS2228), Youth Work 3: Youth Praxis, Policy and Programs (HWSS2231), Youth Studies 3: Identity, Relationships and Interdependencies (HUSO2416), Contemporary Organisational Practices (HUSO1213), Youth Work 4: Field Education 2 (Working with Industry) (HWSS2232), and Youth Studies 4: Human and Spatial Geographies of Youth (HUSO2417). In addition, students select two courses either from university electives or from a chosen minor, allowing them to explore specialized interests and broaden their academic perspective.In the third year, students complete six advanced courses focused on applied practice and professional readiness. These courses include Casework and Advocacy (HWSS1135), Youth Work 5: Field Education 3 (Working for Industry) (HWSS2233), Youth Studies 5: Constructs of Health, Safety and Wellness (HWSS2235), Trauma Informed Practice (HWSS1146), Youth Work 6: Ready for Life and Work (HWSS2234), and Youth Studies 6: Youth Futures and Wicked Problems (HUSO2418). This final year emphasizes fieldwork, critical analysis, and practical skills development, preparing graduates to engage effectively with young people, navigate complex social challenges, and contribute meaningfully to youth-focused organizations and policy initiatives.
