COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Software Engineering program is structured over four years, providing students with a combination of foundational knowledge, advanced technical skills, and professional experience. In the first year, students complete Stage A and Stage B courses designed to develop core programming, mathematical, and statistical skills. Stage A includes Programming Bootcamp 1 (COSC2801), Mathematics for Computing 1 (MATH2411), and Programming Studio 1 (COSC2803), which establish essential programming and problem-solving abilities. Stage B builds on this foundation with Programming Bootcamp 2 (COSC2802), Practical Statistics (MATH2412), and Programming Studio 2 (COSC2804), enhancing coding proficiency, statistical understanding, and practical application through structured projects, all delivered at the City Campus.In the second year, students deepen their theoretical and technical knowledge through seven core courses. These include Computing Theory (COSC1107), Software Engineering Fundamentals (ISYS1118), Advanced Programming Techniques (COSC1076), Software Engineering: Process and Tools (COSC2299), Algorithms and Analysis (COSC2123), Operating Systems Principles (COSC1114), and Professional Computing Practice (COSC1147). Students also select a twelve-credit point course from the Software Engineering Options, allowing them to specialise in an area of interest. This year focuses on equipping students with a strong understanding of software development principles, algorithmic thinking, system design, and professional practice.The third year emphasises practical, industry-based experience alongside advanced software engineering skills. Students undertake Approved Industry Experience 1 (INTE2376) and Approved Industry Experience 2 (INTE2377), each 36 credit points, gaining real-world exposure to professional computing environments. Additionally, Software Engineering Principles and Practice 1 (INTE2374) and 2 (INTE2375) provide further technical and project-based learning.In the fourth year, students complete Object Oriented Software Design (ISYS1084) and the Software Engineering Project (COSC2410), applying their cumulative knowledge to complex software development projects. This final year integrates advanced programming, design principles, and project management skills, preparing graduates for professional careers in software engineering, systems development, and related technology sectors.
