COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) / Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) at RMIT is a structured double degree that integrates social work practice with psychological theory to prepare students for interdisciplinary roles in human services, mental health, and community development. The program builds progressively across five years, beginning with foundational studies in psychology, social work history, ethics, and social policy, alongside core communication and intercultural understanding. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through subjects in developmental, biological, cognitive, and social psychology, as well as casework, advocacy, and Indigenous studies, while strengthening their understanding of mental health and wellbeing. The third year introduces advanced research methods in psychology and social work, group work theory, public policy, and extensive field education through professional placements. The fourth year focuses on specialised practice areas such as psychological assessment, psychopathology, cross-cultural psychology, law for social work, and family practice, along with elective options including forensic psychology or university electives. In the final year, students complete advanced field education and applied research or honours pathways involving community work, policy influence, program evaluation, trauma-informed practice, or a social work thesis. This integrated curriculum ensures graduates develop strong analytical, practical, and ethical skills to address complex social and psychological issues in diverse professional settings.
