COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) program is structured over three years, offering a comprehensive and progressive study of human behaviour, social systems, and psychological theory. In the first year, students complete seven core courses designed to establish a strong foundation in both psychology and social science. These include Foundations of Psychology (BESC1126), Principles of Psychology (BESC1123), Psychology in Society (HUSO2421), Australian Society in a Global Context (HUSO1207), Foundations of Social Research (HUSO2166), Public Policy (POLI1066), and Working with Human Service Consumers (HWSS2247). In addition, students choose one elective from a diverse list of subjects such as Sustainable Futures, Indigenous Studies, Intercultural Communication, Ethics and Reflexive Practice, or Youth Studies, allowing them to tailor their learning to personal and professional interests. In the second year, the program advances students’ theoretical and practical understanding of psychology. The core courses include Developmental Psychology (BESC1182), Biological Psychology (BESC1190), Research Methods in Psychology (BESC1449), Cognitive Psychology (BESC1178), and Social Psychology (BESC1186), which together explore human development, mental processes, behaviour, and social interaction. Students also study Transformative Research and Evaluation (HUSO2393) and Trauma Informed Practice (HWSS1146), deepening their applied research and professional awareness. Additionally, students complete one university elective, encouraging broader interdisciplinary learning. The third year focuses on advanced theoretical integration and professional preparation. Core courses include Professional Practices and Cross-Cultural Psychology (BESC1453), Philosophy and Methodology of Psychology (BESC1437), Psychopathology and Models of Intervention (BESC1445), Psychological Assessment and Individual Differences (BESC1433), Society and Psychology Capstone (HUSO2391), and Contemporary Organisational Practices (HUSO1213). Students then choose one specialised course—either Forensic Psychology (BESC1429), Cross-Cultural and Organisational Psychology (BESC1406), or Applied Psychology Topics (BESC1408)—to refine their focus area. This three-year structure ensures graduates develop a well-rounded understanding of human behaviour, research methods, ethics, and practical application, preparing them for further study or professional roles in psychology, social research, policy, and human services.
