COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with a Chemistry major at RMIT is a flexible three-year program that combines a strong scientific foundation with specialised chemistry studies and practical learning experiences. Students typically complete four subjects each semester, progressing through a structured pathway that balances core science knowledge, major studies, minors, electives, and industry-focused experiences. In Year One, Semester One introduces the Foundations of Science, covering physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, data analysis, and scientific communication, providing essential skills for success in scientific study and research. In Semester Two, students begin their Chemistry major while also undertaking a generalist minor or selecting science subjects that align with their interests and career goals. Throughout Years Two and Three, students continue to complete their Chemistry major, developing expertise in areas such as organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and materials chemistry, while strengthening laboratory, research, and problem-solving skills. Students also complete an advanced minor linked to their area of study, allowing them to build specialised knowledge in a complementary discipline. Elective subjects provide additional flexibility to broaden academic and professional interests. A key feature of the program is the third-year Capstone Project and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience, where students apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges and professional environments. This structure prepares graduates for careers in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, advanced materials, and related scientific industries.
