COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with a Biotechnology major at RMIT is a flexible three-year program designed to provide students with a strong scientific foundation while allowing specialisation in biotechnology. Students typically undertake four subjects each semester, combining core science studies, major subjects, minors, electives, and practical learning experiences. In Year One, Semester One focuses on Foundations of Science, covering essential areas such as physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, data analysis, and scientific communication, ensuring students develop the fundamental skills required for scientific study. In Semester Two, students begin their Biotechnology major while also undertaking a generalist minor or selecting science subjects that align with their interests and career goals. Throughout Years Two and Three, students progressively complete their Biotechnology major, gaining in-depth knowledge of biological systems, biotechnology applications, laboratory techniques, and scientific innovation. In addition, students complete an Advanced Minor linked to their major, enabling them to develop specialised expertise in a complementary area of science. The program also includes elective subjects that provide flexibility to broaden knowledge across different disciplines. A key component of the degree is the third-year Capstone Project and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience, where students apply their scientific knowledge and practical skills to real-world challenges and professional environments. This structure prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, research, and related industries.
