COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Bachelor of Professional Communication at RMIT, students begin by completing a set of compulsory onboarding modules to establish a strong foundation in the field. This includes four core courses: Introduction to Advertising, Introduction to Digital Communication, Introduction to Public Relations, and Locating Knowledges, each worth 12 credit points and delivered at the City Campus. These courses provide essential theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and critical frameworks, preparing students to navigate the diverse communication landscape. Alongside these core courses, students complete 48 credit points from their selected combination of subjects, allowing early exploration of majors and minors aligned with their individual interests and career aspirations. In the second year, students deepen their expertise by completing 96 credit points from their chosen combination of subjects. This stage allows for more focused study in specific areas of communication, including Advertising, Public Relations, Digital Communication, or a combination of these through a double major. Students also have the opportunity to broaden their skillset by selecting minors from a wide range of multidisciplinary options, integrating both creative and professional knowledge. This year emphasizes practical application, critical analysis, and industry awareness, helping students connect theoretical insights with real-world communication challenges. In the third and final year of the program, students continue to complete 96 credit points from their selected combination, concentrating on advanced topics and specialized electives. During this stage, students are expected to consolidate their learning through industry projects, research-informed coursework, and portfolio development. By the end of the degree, graduates will have gained substantial expertise across their chosen areas, equipped with the creative, analytical, and professional skills needed to thrive as adaptable, socially aware, and technologically fluent communication professionals in a global context. This structured yet flexible progression ensures that students graduate with both depth and breadth of knowledge, ready to meet the evolving demands of the communication industry.
