COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Photography program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of photographic practice, combining technical skill development, conceptual thinking, and professional engagement. In the first year, students undertake foundational and professional studio courses, including the Photography Foundation Studio and Photography Professional Studio 1, which together provide 48 credit points of intensive practical experience. Complementing this are courses in Fundamental Photographic Techniques, Photographic Lighting and Representation, and Imaging Technologies 1 and 2, giving students a solid grounding in both traditional and digital imaging workflows. These first-year courses total 96 credit points and aim to equip students with essential technical competence while fostering an awareness of professional standards and photographic contexts. In the second year, students continue to develop their practical and conceptual skills through Photography Professional Studio 2 and 3, alongside courses in Photography Histories and Theories and Photographic Lighting 2. This stage encourages students to deepen their understanding of photographic aesthetics, technical application, and theoretical frameworks. Additionally, students select 12 credit points from the School Options list and 12 credit points from University electives, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration and broadening their creative perspectives. The second-year curriculum emphasizes integration of theory and practice while beginning to guide students toward their chosen areas of specialisation. The third year focuses on professional and independent photographic practice. Students undertake Photography Professional Studio 4 and the Photography Major Project, providing opportunities to apply accumulated skills and knowledge to self-directed projects that demonstrate their individual creative voice. The course Contextualising Photographic Practice further develops critical and analytical skills, enabling students to situate their work within broader social, cultural, and technological contexts. By the conclusion of the program, graduates are prepared to enter the professional photography industry with advanced technical abilities, a strong conceptual foundation, and the critical insight necessary to produce work that is both innovative and contextually informed.
