COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Industrial Design program, students complete eight core courses that provide a comprehensive foundation in design principles, materials, processes, and sustainability. These courses include User Centred Design Studio, Design in Society: Histories, Politics and Contexts of Application, Design Prototyping: Materials, Processes and Experimentation, Industrial Design Drawing, Design for Sustainability Studio, Industrial Design Ecologies: Sustainability, Socio-technical Systems and Change, Computer Aided Industrial Design, and Industrial Design Engineering: Materials, Mechanics, Processes and Principles of Production. Together, they develop practical skills, critical thinking, and an understanding of the social and environmental impact of design.In the second year, students advance their knowledge with Industrial Design Tactics: Temporal, Perceptual and Experiential Methods and Interactive Systems Design. They also select two design studio courses from options such as Design Studio: Materiality, Speculative, Social, or Digital, and choose one additional course from the program options list as well as one University Elective. This structure allows students to begin specialising in areas of interest while continuing to build core industrial design skills.The third year emphasizes design research, business, and advanced studio work. Students complete core courses including The Contemporary Industrial Design Enterprise: Modes and Practice in Design Business and Methods in Design Research and Practice. Additionally, they select two further design studio courses not previously completed, one course from the program options list, and one University Elective. This stage focuses on developing professional practice, research capabilities, and creative problem-solving.In the fourth year, students undertake the Industrial Design Honours Project, split into Part One: Design Research and Development and Part Two: Design Research and Prototyping, alongside Professional Ethics and Design Strategy, and Industrial Design Honours: Reflection and Exposition. This final year consolidates all learning through intensive research, prototyping, and reflective practice, preparing students for professional or research careers in industrial design.
