COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) program at RMIT provides students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation to address complex environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and resource management.In Year One, students complete 84 credit points of core subjects that introduce essential scientific skills and knowledge. These include courses in data analysis, physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, STEM for sustainable development, environmental chemistry, and environmental studies. Students also select 12 credit points from a range of science options or university electives, allowing them to explore topics such as artificial intelligence, geospatial techniques, cell biology, energy and the environment, or development economics. This year emphasizes foundational scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and an understanding of environmental issues in a global context.Year Two expands students’ expertise with 84 credit points covering the soil environment, hydrosphere, atmosphere, plant diversity, ecology and conservation, environmental chemical issues, and environmental policy. Students also undertake 12 credit points from a chosen advanced minor, giving them the opportunity to specialise in an area of interest. Practical, analytical, and research skills are further developed, preparing students for applied environmental work.In Year Three, students focus on environmental sampling, analysis, pollution management, and sustainability, completing 24 credit points in these core areas. Additionally, students engage in applied science projects or work experience totaling 24 credit points. These activities provide hands-on, real-world experience in laboratory and field settings, fostering teamwork, project management, and practical problem-solving skills.Throughout the program, students gain a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and industry-relevant skills, equipping them to address environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable solutions in diverse contexts, including research, environmental management, policy, and conservation initiatives.
