COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) at RMIT is a four-year program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, practical skills, and professional experience.1year One, students complete 84 credit points of core courses, including professional engineering practice, digital fundamentals, engineering science, engineering mathematics, introduction to engineering design, introduction to mechanical engineering, and applied thermodynamics. Depending on prior mathematics preparation, students may also take Introduction to Engineering Mathematics or Introduction to Environmental and Sustainable Systems Engineering. This year establishes essential analytical, design, and problem-solving skills in mechanical engineering.Year Two focuses on applied mechanical engineering concepts. Students complete 60 credit points from core courses such as engineering dynamics, advanced mathematics for engineers, fluid mechanics of mechanical systems, mechanical design 1, and mechanics and materials 2. Additional courses include systems engineering principles, mechatronics principles, applied heat and mass transfer, computational fluid dynamics, engineering computer graphics, renewable energy systems, or professional engineering experience, as well as university electives. This year strengthens practical and computational skills necessary for advanced mechanical engineering applications.In Year Three, students deepen their technical knowledge through courses in solid mechanics 3, mechanical design 2, mechanical vibrations, heat transfer, finite element analysis, and mechanics of machines. Students also complete a minor combination or technical options such as mechatronics principles, applied heat and mass transfer, computational fluid dynamics, engineering computer graphics, or professional engineering experience. This year integrates design, analysis, and specialised engineering topics, preparing students for complex mechanical projects.Year Four consolidates learning and emphasizes professional engineering practice. Students complete core courses including thermal-fluid system design, automatic control, and the two-part Engineering Capstone Project. They also select courses in mechanical vibrations, heat transfer, finite element analysis, or mechanics of machines if not previously completed. This final year develops advanced design, analysis, and problem-solving skills while ensuring graduates are prepared to work in diverse mechanical engineering industries, including automotive, energy, manufacturing, and automation sectors.
