COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours) at RMIT is a four-year program designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities needed for careers in chemical engineering and related industries.In Year One, students complete seven core courses covering the foundations of engineering, including professional engineering practice, engineering science, engineering mathematics, digital fundamentals, creative engineering CAD, introduction to chemical engineering, and numerical methods/statistics for engineers. Students also select one university elective to broaden their learning and develop interdisciplinary skills. This first year provides a solid grounding in engineering principles, analytical thinking, and computational techniques essential for chemical engineering.Year Two focuses on building applied knowledge and technical expertise with seven core courses including engineering chemistry, chemical engineering fundamentals, fluid flow and particle mechanics, process thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process principles, and reaction engineering. Students again choose one university elective to complement their core studies. This year strengthens understanding of chemical processes, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena, preparing students to tackle more complex engineering challenges.In Year Three, students deepen their design, analysis, and research skills through eight courses, including transfer processes, process plant design and economics, environmental and hazard analysis, chemical engineering computer design, process systems design, process control and simulation, engineering experimental investigations, and fundamentals of biochemistry. This year integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, enabling students to design, simulate, and evaluate chemical engineering systems while considering safety and environmental factors.Year Four focuses on advanced design, problem-solving, and professional preparation through four courses: the two-part Engineering Capstone Project and Chemical Engineering Design Projects 1 and 2. These courses emphasize practical, team-based projects that integrate learning from previous years, enabling students to develop innovative, sustainable solutions to real-world chemical engineering problems. Upon graduation, students are equipped with the expertise, analytical skills, and practical experience required to pursue careers in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food production, water treatment, and process engineering.
