COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) program provides a structured four-year study pathway that develops a strong understanding of human biology, health, and disease, while integrating research, laboratory practice, and advanced scientific inquiry. In the first year, students complete eight core courses including Communication and Professional Practice, Biology and Chemistry for Human Biosciences, Indigenous Health and Diversity, Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Introduction to Medical Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and STEM for Sustainable Development. These foundational subjects introduce essential scientific principles and health perspectives, preparing students for higher-level study. In the second year, learning advances into molecular and physiological systems through Genetics and Molecular Biology, Biostatistics, Principles of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Human Pathophysiology 1 and 2, and Cellular Pathways, alongside elective courses from a chosen specialisation area. The third year focuses on disease mechanisms and technological innovation in medicine through courses such as Respiratory and Cardiovascular Diseases, Neurodevelopment – Origins and Outcomes, Precision Medicine, Foundations in Digital Health, Infections and Immunology, and a Research Project for Medical Sciences. Students continue to personalise their learning with elective options aligned to their research or career goals. The final year is research-intensive, where students undertake Research Methods and Scientific Communication, followed by a series of major research projects (Research Project 1, 2, and 3), allowing them to apply scientific reasoning, experimental design, and analytical skills in a professional research context. This program combines theoretical knowledge with extensive practical and investigative experience, equipping graduates with expertise in biomedical science and the capability to pursue careers in medical research, biotechnology, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, or progress into postgraduate studies such as a Master’s or PhD in health and life sciences.
