COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) at Murdoch University is a 1.75-year full-time program designed for graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in a non-education field relevant to secondary teaching. The course equips students with the professional knowledge, practical skills, and capabilities required to teach Years 7-12, providing a pathway into a rewarding teaching career. Students begin with the Preparing for Teaching Intensive (EDN587), which builds foundational teaching knowledge, and then progress through a series of core units covering adolescent, family, and community health, strategies for effective learning and teaching, literacy and numeracy in secondary education, diversity and inclusion, and professional experience placements.Hands-on learning is a key component of the program. Students complete multiple professional experience units, including differentiation within diverse contexts and research in practice, allowing them to apply theoretical concepts in real classroom settings. The program also incorporates the SimLabTM, a virtual learning environment using actors and avatars, to prepare students for managing challenging classroom situations and developing effective teaching strategies. Core research and assessment units, such as Research for Teaching and the Quality Teaching Performance Assessment, ensure students are able to critically reflect on their teaching practice.Students select a teaching area from options including English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, or Vocational and Education Training programs. This selection allows students to specialise in their chosen discipline while gaining the professional flexibility to teach across multiple areas. Graduates are prepared to work in secondary schools across Australia and internationally and may also pursue careers in education-related fields such as museums, science centres, and community education. The course is accredited by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in articulation with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, ensuring graduates are eligible for professional registration and recognised teaching qualifications.
