COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Food Security consists of 48 credit points made up entirely of core requirements, beginning with 12 credit points of foundational units that establish the scientific and policy frameworks central to global food security. These include Global Biosecurity (BIO639), Challenges in Food Security (BIO688) and Sustainable Land and Water Management (ENV554). Students then complete 36 credit points by choosing one of three pathways: Case Study, Internship or Dissertation. In the Case Study pathway, students complete Agricultural and Veterinary Science Research Studies (BIO600) and select 33 credit points of electives from a broad list covering plant biosecurity, sustainable food and fibre production, climate change adaptation, environmental policy, innovation, global governance, social-ecological systems, sustainability and community development. The Internship pathway includes a 6-credit Professional Placement (BIO683) and 30 credit points of electives from the same wide-ranging list, enabling students to develop industry experience while tailoring their learning to areas such as climate policy, resilience planning, community development, environmental governance and agricultural sustainability. The Dissertation pathway is research-focused and requires the Food Security Masters Dissertation (BIO689) and Advanced Research Methods for Scientists (MMF600), alongside 21 credit points of thematic electives drawn from the same elective pool. Across all pathways, students can build expertise in key issues like climate risk, biosecurity, sustainability, ecosystems, global governance and innovation. This flexible structure allows students to develop specialised knowledge aligned with their career interests while gaining applied, research or industry experience in contemporary food security challenges.
