COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Statistics degree consists of 72 credit points and begins with 9 credit points of core study, including Statistical Data Analysis and two specified electives. Students choose one unit from either Transitioning Through Time and Space or Transition to IT, followed by one mathematics foundation unit selected based on their prior preparation; those with a strong background in specialist mathematics may take Discrete Mathematics and Logic, while others begin with Introductory Calculus with Applications and may later complete Discrete Mathematics as an elective. The primary major in Mathematics and Statistics accounts for 24 credit points, providing the central focus of the degree. Students also complete 3 credit points of Discovery study and 36 credit points of flexible Options, which allow them to tailor the course to their interests and career goals. These options may include a second major from a wide range of recommended areas. Students interested in physical sciences may choose Chemistry or Physics, with additional prerequisite units required. Those pursuing IT can select from majors such as Business Information Systems, Cyber Security and Forensics, Internetworking and Network Security or Games Technology, depending on prerequisite completion. Environmental and conservation pathways include majors in Environmental Science and Management or Marine Biology, which also require specific foundational units. Additional options include majors in business, medical and molecular sciences, agriculture, animal-related sciences and other available majors across the university. Students may also choose minors worth 12 credit points each or up to 30 credit points of general electives to further personalise their study plan. Overall, the structure offers strong mathematical foundations combined with significant flexibility to pair Mathematics and Statistics with a complementary discipline.
