COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine is a 96-credit-point program made up entirely of core study requirements that build strong scientific, diagnostic and laboratory-based skills. The structure includes 84 credit points of required units covering foundations in science, chemistry, human biology, cell biology and vertebrate form, before progressing into advanced medical laboratory disciplines. Students begin with units such as Succeeding in Science, Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science, Fundamentals of Chemistry, Introduction to the Human Body and Cell Biology, establishing essential knowledge in biology and chemistry. They then advance into specialised medical science topics including medical microbiology, histology and histotechnology, medical immunology, biochemistry, haematology, molecular biology, pathological basis of disease and diagnostic genomics. The program includes multiple clinical-level units such as Clinical Microbiology I and II, Clinical Biochemistry I and II, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Haematology I and II and Histopathology, giving students deep insight into disease processes and diagnostic laboratory methods. Two major workplace-based units, Laboratory Medicine Practice I and II, each worth six credit points, provide essential Work Integrated Learning experience where students apply laboratory techniques in real clinical environments. Students also complete 12 credit points of specified electives selected from three groups aligned with potential career pathways. These include biomedical physiology, human pharmacology, advances in medical science, genetics, evolution, genetic engineering, metabolic biochemistry, or forensic-focused units such as forensic anatomy, forensic DNA analysis and forensic toxicology. Overall, the structure equips students with comprehensive biomedical and clinical science training, advanced analytical and laboratory skills, and substantial workplace experience to prepare them for professional roles in diagnostic pathology and related fields.
