COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) at Murdoch University provides students with the qualification required to teach Years 7 to 12, while allowing them to specialise in a primary teaching area and a second minor teaching area. The course is designed to prepare students for a professional career in secondary education through a combination of theoretical study, practical experience, and professional skill development. The program consists of 96 credit points, including 45 credit points of core units, 30 credit points in a major teaching area, and 21 credit points in co-majors, minors, or elective options. Core units cover essential topics such as literacy and numeracy in secondary education, learning and teaching, assessment and reporting, adolescent health, inclusive education, and creating effective learning environments. Students also engage with technology in education and explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across the curriculum. Practical experience is a key component of the course, with multiple professional experience placements embedded throughout the program, including initial teaching practice, secondary teaching practicum, and a final professional experience unit. Majors cover a range of disciplines, including Biology and Environmental Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Geography and Business & Enterprise, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, Physical Sciences, History, Politics, and English. Co-majors or minors provide additional specialisation in areas such as Biological Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, HASS teaching, Secondary Education Support, and Secondary English. Upon completion, graduates will have developed the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to be confident and effective secondary teachers. The course also prepares students for professional accreditation with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, ensuring they meet national standards for teaching. This combination of academic and practical training equips graduates to succeed in a variety of secondary education environments.
