COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood and Primary Teaching is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical experience to teach children from birth to Year 6. The course consists of 96 credit points, integrating theoretical learning with extensive hands-on experience in early childhood and primary education settings. Core units cover foundational topics such as ideas in education, understanding teachers’ work, thinking mathematically and scientifically, and nurturing creativity in young learners. Students also explore living and learning with technology, inclusive education, integrated curriculum planning, and teaching strategies across key learning areas including English, mathematics, science, humanities, health and physical education, and the arts. The program emphasizes practical application through professional experience placements, starting with early childhood centres and progressing to primary classrooms. These placements include specialized experiences such as teaching English and mathematics in practice, programming across the curriculum, and final professional experiences in early childhood teaching, which allow students to consolidate their skills under the guidance of experienced educators. Additional units focus on children, families, and communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, literacy and language development, and assessment and reporting. The course also incorporates SimLab technology, enabling students to practice classroom interactions and teaching strategies in a virtual environment before entering real classrooms. Assessment literacy is supported through units such as teaching and assessing oral language, reading and writing development, and quality teaching performance assessment. Students are also prepared for the LANTITE literacy and numeracy tests, which are mandatory for teacher registration in Australia. This structured combination of theoretical study, practical teaching experiences, and professional preparation ensures that graduates are confident, creative, and highly skilled educators ready to make a positive impact in early childhood and primary education settings.
