ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Murdoch University is a public university located in Perth, Western Australia, with additional campuses in Singapore and Dubai. It was established as the state’s second university on 25 July 1973 and accepted its first undergraduate students in 1975. The university is named after Walter Murdoch, a prominent local author, philosopher, and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia. Murdoch University is known for producing highly employable graduates and achieving strong student satisfaction ratings. It is also a member of the Innovative Research Universities group. The idea for the university began in 1962 when the government earmarked land in Bull Creek for a new institution, with particular emphasis on establishing the School of Veterinary Science as its first professional faculty. The university was formally constituted in 1973 and inaugurated in 1974 on Murdoch’s 100th birthday. From its inception, it adopted a holistic admissions policy, considering factors beyond school exam results, a practice later adopted by other universities. In recent years, the university faced scrutiny regarding the enrolment of international students, with concerns over academic standards. In 2021, it introduced a new “MU” logo to reflect a modern and progressive identity. Murdoch University has three Australian campuses: the main South Street Campus in Murdoch, Rockingham Campus, and Mandurah Campus. The South Street Campus, covering 2.27 square kilometres, houses the only veterinary school in Western Australia and includes extensive livestock, farms, and renewable energy facilities. Campus features include Bush Court, Chinese gardens, the Joglo Rahayu Peace Pavilion, and various student facilities such as myMurdoch Advice centres, a renovated Student Hub, dining options including Sir Walter’s restaurant, and pop-up food trucks. Overall, Murdoch University offers a comprehensive educational environment that balances academic rigor with modern student support and facilities, establishing itself as a key institution in Western Australia and beyond.
