COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work is structured as a 96-credit-point program divided into two main parts: Part A, Discipline Studies (48 credit points), and Part B, Applied Studies (48 credit points). Part A focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of social work as a professional, ethical, and humanistic practice. Students gain in-depth knowledge, skills, and competencies across four core pillars of social work practice: professionalism, knowledge, skills, and context, with critical thinking embedded throughout. The curriculum covers human behavior, social work assessment and intervention, case conceptualisation, and both mezzo and macro-level practice in the context of the Australian welfare system. Special attention is given to legal frameworks and culturally responsive practice, particularly regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Research principles are integrated to support evidence-informed practice. Part B, Applied Studies, enables students to translate theoretical knowledge into practice through supervised placements in authentic social work settings. These units allow students to understand the complex interactions between social workers, clients, and agency systems, while applying their skills to real-world challenges. Students can choose electives aligned with specific practice areas such as child protection or family violence, and select a capstone project or, for a limited cohort, an alternative research project to consolidate their learning. The program is designed to scaffold progression through the curriculum, combining academic learning with professional practice to prepare graduates for competent, reflective, and ethical practice in diverse social work contexts.
