COURSE CURRICULUM
The course is structured across three interconnected parts that guide students from foundational learning through to advanced professional practice. Part A, Foundation Studies, introduces the essential concepts underpinning nutrition and dietetics, offering an orientation for students whose prior studies are outside nutrition science. In this stage, students explore nutrition and food science as the basis for dietetic practice, examine the Australian food supply, and consider population health from a nutritional perspective. Key areas include understanding health behaviours, cultural safety and responsiveness, methods for assessing nutritional status, and the role of diet in the development and management of chronic diseases common in westernised societies. Part B, Practice Development, builds on this foundation by developing the core professional knowledge and applied skills needed for evidence-based and person-centred dietetic practice. Students learn to manage a wide range of nutrition-related conditions and diseases, develop capabilities in nutrition education, case management and counselling, and gain insight into strategies for influencing health and nutrition at the broader system level. This includes an understanding of healthcare systems, service delivery, organisational management, ethics and quality improvement, ensuring students are well-prepared to work effectively within multidisciplinary environments. Part C, Professional Practice and Placement, provides the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings under the supervision of experienced practitioners. Through professional placements and practical learning experiences, students strengthen their clinical reasoning, refine their communication and teamwork skills, and extend their research capabilities across diverse practice contexts. This final component ensures students graduate with the confidence and competence required to transition successfully into the workforce as emerging dietetic professionals. Depending on prior qualifications, students may enter the course at different levels, completing either all three parts or only the advanced components, with flexibility to accept or decline credit based on their academic and professional goals.
