COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Mathematics is structured around a progressive learning model divided into three key parts that build depth, breadth and advanced capability in mathematical practice and theory. Part A, Foundation studies, serves to strengthen your core understanding of mathematics by allowing you to select units that align with your existing knowledge base while expanding your competence in areas such as statistics or pure, applied and computational mathematics. This stage ensures that all students, regardless of background, begin the course with a solid and coherent grounding. Part B, Discipline studies, allows you to consolidate this growing expertise by engaging more deeply with one or more fields of mathematics. Through these units you begin to refine your academic direction and develop stronger analytical, theoretical and problem-solving skills. Part C, Advanced discipline studies, represents the most specialised component of the course, offering advanced knowledge in modern mathematical theories and applications. Here, you will undertake a research project that cultivates independent inquiry, project management abilities and creative approaches to complex mathematical challenges. A broad selection of units across pure mathematics, applied and computational mathematics and statistics enables you to tailor your studies toward specific interests or career goals, while optional professional development learning supports readiness for industry or further research. Entry into the master’s program is flexible and depends on your prior qualifications, with three possible entry levels that determine how many credit points you must complete. Students entering at level 1 complete 96 credit points across all three parts, those at level 2 complete 72 credit points from Parts B and C, and those at level 3 complete 48 credit points comprising only Part C.
