COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Journalism at Monash University is structured to provide comprehensive training across five integrated parts, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills for a successful career in media. Part A, Foundation studies, equips students with essential knowledge and skills in global media and communications at the graduate level, preparing them for advanced study in journalism. Part B, Core studies, immerses students in the practice and theory of journalism, offering a combination of academic and hands-on work. Through this, students gain expertise in creating journalism across multiple platforms, including print, video, audio, photography, digital production, investigative reporting, and data journalism, in both local and international contexts. Part C, Applied studies, focuses on professional or scholarly projects that contribute to a portfolio of work, allowing students to develop practical experience and demonstrate competencies relevant to the industry. Part D, Professional practice studies, offers units designed with industry experts to build essential professional skills and competencies for a range of career pathways in journalism and related fields. Part E, Elective studies, allows students to tailor their learning by choosing from a variety of options that enhance specific skills and knowledge in journalism and communications. Students may also undertake an optional research pathway, providing a 24-credit-point program for those seeking eligibility to apply for higher degree research studies, such as a Masters by Research or PhD. Entry into the program is flexible, with credit granted depending on prior qualifications, which determines the point of entry and total credit points required. Entry level 1 students complete all five parts for 96 credit points, while entry levels 2 and 3 complete 72 and 48 credit points respectively, with variations in the mix of professional practice and elective studies. The course includes progression maps for each semester, and a 1.5-year intensive option is available to complete the program within 12 months. This structure ensures that graduates leave with both the theoretical grounding and practical experience necessary to excel in the rapidly evolving field of journalism.
