COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Financial Mathematics at Monash University is a highly specialised program designed to equip mathematically talented individuals with the skills needed to thrive in the finance industry. Structured into three parts—Orientation Studies, Specialist Studies, and Applied Professional Practice—the course offers a comprehensive progression from foundational to advanced learning, with a focus on real-world application. Part A, Orientation Studies, helps students from varying academic backgrounds build a solid base in core areas such as econometrics, mathematical methods, and stochastic processes. This foundation prepares students for the advanced topics ahead. In Part B, Specialist Studies, the focus shifts to deepening expertise in critical areas such as stochastic calculus, quantitative risk management, interest rate modelling, and computational finance. Students can also explore elective topics including financial econometrics, statistical learning in finance, Markov processes, and machine learning, allowing for tailored learning based on interests and career goals. Part C, Applied Professional Practice, bridges theory and industry by offering students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world financial challenges. High-achieving students (with a distinction average in Part B) may undertake a major industry project or internship, while others may complete a minor project alongside elective units from disciplines such as business or IT. This practical component strengthens students’ employability and prepares them for roles in banking, asset management, insurance, and financial consulting. Entry to the course is flexible, with students admitted at different levels depending on their academic background—ranging from a full 96-credit point structure to a more advanced 48-credit point entry for those with an honours degree or equivalent in mathematics or statistics. Overall, the Master of Financial Mathematics offers rigorous academic training, practical industry experience, and strong pathways to careers in professional quantitative finance.
