COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Environment and Sustainability at Monash University is designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to address complex sustainability challenges across environmental, social, and economic systems. The course is structured into four parts—Core Studies, Specialisation Preparatory Studies, Specialist Studies, and Advanced Practice—offering a progressive and adaptable learning experience. In Part A, students develop a foundational understanding of the interdependence between nature, society, and the economy, learning key principles of sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective. Part B, Specialisation Preparatory Studies, is tailored for those entering the course from unrelated fields, providing the foundational discipline knowledge necessary to pursue advanced studies in a chosen specialisation. Part C focuses on Specialist Studies, where students deepen their expertise in a selected area of environment and sustainability while also gaining research skills or developing the capacity to work across disciplines, cultures, and contexts. Finally, Part D, Advanced Practice, offers two pathways: students can either complete a professional development portfolio through coursework, including options for internships or interdisciplinary projects, or pursue a 24-credit research thesis for those aiming to transition into a higher degree by research. The course also accommodates various entry points based on prior qualifications. Students may enter at different levels—completing 96, 72, or 48 credit points—depending on their academic background. Those eligible for credit may also choose to complete the full program for a more comprehensive experience. With its focus on applied learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, the program prepares graduates to become change-makers and leaders in sustainability, ready to work across sectors to develop innovative, practical solutions for a more equitable and sustainable future,
